We want our homes to be warmer, more energy efficient and better prepared for changing weather.
Our Sustainability and Decarbonisation Strategy explains how we will improve our homes, reduce our environmental impact and work towards net zero by 2050. Net zero means reducing carbon emissions as much as possible and balancing any emissions that remain.
Our priorities
We will focus on five key areas:
We are working towards all our homes achieving an Energy Performance Certificate rating of C or above by 2030.
An Energy Performance Certificate, usually called an EPC, shows how energy efficient a home is. Homes are rated from A, the most efficient, to G, the least efficient.
Where appropriate, improvements could include better insulation, more efficient heating and renewable energy technology such as solar panels.
Changing weather may increase the risk of flooding and homes becoming too hot.
We will assess these risks and use the information to help us plan future improvements. We will also provide customers with clear information about any risks affecting their homes.
We will work to reduce waste, use water responsibly and choose more sustainably sourced products and services.
Our aim is to divert 95% of waste from landfill by 2030. This means reusing, recycling or recovering materials instead of sending them to landfill.
We want customers to help shape our sustainability work.
This will include opportunities to take part in consultations, support local environmental projects and become a customer sustainability champion. We will also work with our partners to improve green spaces, support wildlife and create wider benefits for our communities.
We will monitor the energy performance of our homes, our carbon emissions and the progress we are making.
We will review our approach as customer needs, funding, technology and regulations change.
Every home is different, so not every improvement or technology will be suitable for every property.
When planning work, we will consider the condition and design of your home, your individual needs, the expected benefits, available funding and value for money.
If we are planning significant work to your home, we will explain:
what work is proposed and why;
when we expect it to happen;
how it may affect you;
what support will be available; and
how you can ask questions or raise concerns.
We will work with you to minimise disruption and consider your individual circumstances.
