Customer Winter Weather Advice

Winter has arrived, bringing colder temperatures and the potential for icy conditions. We want to help you keep your home safe, warm, and comfortable throughout the season. Here are some essential tips to get your home winter-ready:

Check Your Boiler and Heating

  • Test your boiler and heating system before the cold sets in to ensure everything is working properly.
  • The recommended healthy room temperature is 21°C for living rooms and 18°C for other areas.
  • If you notice any issues with your boiler or heating system, please contact us to report this as an emergency repair as soon as possible by calling 0808 100 9596.
  • For more information about repairs, visit www.magentaliving.org.uk/repairs.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Run your taps regularly during cold spells to help prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep your heating on low in very cold weather, even if you're away, to protect your pipes.
  • Know where your water stop tap is located so you can turn off the water quickly in an emergency.

We want to ensure you are as comfortable as possible in your own home. Our heating contractor, Sureserve have created some short videos to talk you through some common issues you may come across with your heating or hot water - you can watch them here: www.sureserve.co.uk/support-for-residents/#helpful-video-hints-and-tips

  • Keep torches and a fully charged mobile phone handy - avoid using candles for safety.
  • If the issue persists, call 105 to report the problem to SP Energy Networks.

Damp, Mould, and Ventilation

  • Ventilate rooms for a few minutes when cooking, bathing, or drying clothes indoors to reduce condensation and limit damp and mould.
  • Make sure extractor fans are working and not blocked, contact us if repairs are needed.
  • Treat any small areas of mould promptly with a suitable fungicidal wash.

General Safety Checks

  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Inspect fence panels and roof tiles for security and damage before stormy weather.
  • Unblock leaves from gutters and grids if safe to do so.
