Moving to Universal Credit

Wirral will start to move over to Universal Credit from Monday 22 January 2024, this will affect you if you are tax credit only claimant.

Universal Credit is replacing the following six benefits called ‘legacy benefits’:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Working Tax Credits
  • Income Support

Moving you over to Universal Credit is called a ‘managed migration’.

You will receive a UC Migration Notice letter from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and you cannot ignore it.

You need to act to ensure that you don’t lose out on what you are entitled to.

You will have three months to make a claim for Universal Credit.  At the end of the three months your legacy benefits will stop. During the three months, you need to think about when it would be best for you to make your claim to ensure you protect your income.

You can get help and advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).  Their Help to Claim Advisors can be contacted on 0800 144 8 444.  This is free and is open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
